SAP HANA SPS12 Upgrade and Exploring New Features (Part 1)

SAP HANA SPS12 Update/Upgrade process and what's new in this release (Part 1) covers the update procedure while Part 2 will cover the new/changed features.

While we were working on upgrading one of our HANA systems and producing this SPS12 Update and New/Changed Features blog, SAP announced HANA 2.0 at SAP Teched Barcelona!  Do you often get the feeling of anxiety that you're always running behind?  Not to worry, this blog topic is not obsolete and won't be anytime soon because many customers are still on versions ranging from SPS8 to SPS11, and the upgrade process to HANA 2.0 would be pretty much the same.

Little that we know about HANA 2.0 from the announcement (we haven't got our hands on 2.0 yet!), the most significant feature of interest seems to be "the new active / active-read enabled option enables IT organizations to leverage secondary systems – previously used only for system replication – to offload read-intensive workloads for improved operations".  It seems like a long overdue useful feature, relating to our last 2 blogs on HANA Distributed Systems - Scale Out & HA, and HANA System Replication for DR.

In Part 1, we'll briefly cover the update process, while in Part 2 we'll cover improvements in SPS12 that interest us from the Basis perspective including:

  • HANA Security Administration
  • HANA System Administration
  • HANA Availability & Performance Monitoring
  • HANA Workload Management
  • HANA Capture and Replay
