SAP Basis Automation of HANA Backup and Cleanup

Posted by Terry Kempis on Aug 2, 2017 5:25:59 PM

It's cool if you can perform SAP monitoring and SAP HANA monitoring without installing an army of agents, but that's not enough, we want to enhance SAP Basis Automation using Cross-platform automation capabilities.  Whether you want to automate system copy post-processing with our SID-Refresh tool, or manage backups, it's easy once you are monitoring SAP with IT-Conductor.  The IT operations automation possibilities for the Basis team are limitless once customers realize up to 90% saving in the time and cost over traditional SAP monitoring solutions.

In this article we'll demonstrate HANA backup integration as well as cleanup of old backups.  These same principles and processes can be applied to other databases such as Oracle, SAP ASE, etc.

Introduction

  1. Creating backup of HANA databases (single or multi-tenant) utilizing the ITC advanced feature ‘SQL Jobs’ presented in  ‘Advanced SAP Monitoring Features by IT-Conductor’.
  2. Clean-up of catalog and files of older backups, using hdbsql and Linux’s crontab for scheduling. Note – future release of ITC will includes ssh feature which allows scheduling of task within ITC, instead of using crontab.

Making a List and Checking it Twice

Posted by Linh Nguyen on Dec 23, 2015 12:50:23 PM

IT'S THE HOLIDAYS:

The holiday season is a great time to spend relaxing and enjoying life with friends and family, but many times we feel more stressed trying to get our list of things to do DONE before we head out.  Just like that Out-of-Office email responder, it is something we as working professionals normally do before we take our break, and there are many other things I'd like to do before I check out of my office.  Therefore, I would make a list and check it twice, since it would be nice to not be interrupted on my vacation for things that I consider naughty to not have done.

SAP Basis, Let's Automate IT (Topic 4: Cross-platform Process Flows)

Posted by Linh Nguyen on Nov 18, 2015 10:38:29 AM

Have you seen this BBC article in September 2015 "Will a Robot take over your Job?"? The first thing I did when I read it was I immediately checked if SAP Basis was in the list, or at least IT Analyst / Architect.  Phew! Luckily I think we're still pretty safe.  But that doesn't mean we should stop finding ways to make our daily repetitive tasks more efficient, and if possible automate them.  This is where IT Operations process automation can help.  Yes SAP Basis and IT Operations folks can be just as cool applying DevOps to automate a lean enterprise IT.  Not sure what DevOps is?  I like this non-conforming take on DevOps by Stephen McKay "What (I think) Enterprise IT really needs to learn from the DevOps movement" especially his challenge at the end 'So go prove it - go make a difference in your IT department, and make IT a different experience in your Enterprise'.

Back to the meat of this publication, we're going in depth to reveal how IT-Conductor can help SAP Basis and IT Operations compose and schedule a process which automates a set of cross-platform activities involving administrative scripts, and jobs such as Basis housekeeping tasks, database scripts such as HANA Mini-Checks, and OS-level scripts.

The fundamental building blocks for this process automation are the various activities which we automated in previous article SAP Basis, Let's Automate IT (Topic 3: Automated Operations)

SAP Basis, Let's Automate IT (Topic 3: Automated Operations)

Posted by Linh Nguyen on Nov 4, 2015 2:02:15 PM

Why do something manually if it can be automated?  Nowadays almost everyone has a smart phone, some have started to use smart watches, a few lucky early testers have gotten the chance to try smart driver-less cars (especially here in Silicon Valley near Google), while smart homes are also on the rise.  Why not Smart IT?  We previously provided a high-level overview of 10 Ways to Smart Automation.  In this publication, we're going in depth to reveal how IT-Conductor can help SAP Basis and IT Operations automate administrative scripts, and jobs such as Basis housekeeping tasks, database scripts such as HANA Mini-Checks, and OS-level scripts.

7 Telltale Signs If your IT Operations is Operational

Posted by Linh Nguyen on Oct 7, 2015 6:41:44 PM

HOW THINGS USED TO BE:

Some of our readers may remember how SAP Basis used to be the one-stop shop for all technical SAP, Database, OS, Servers, Storage, yes and even Network and Security.  Basis teams designed, built and operated, which meant we also scheduled jobs, monitored performance, and of course were on call for all things technical SAP.  Those days of working in Basis Operations maybe long gone for large enterprises with segregation of duties and specialization due to increased complexities and compliance requirements, but sometimes we wonder if those were the good old days when it was more efficient.

Today, most enterprise IT division comprise of many technology silos and teams which function as shared services.  IT Operations is one of those centralized shared services, and SAP Basis are separated out from System Administrators, DBAs, etc.  Everybody relies on IT Operations (sometimes referred to NOC - Network Operations Center) to provide centralized monitoring and share incident management with IT Helpdesks.  Sounds rosy right?  It can be, but many times there's also the law of unintended consequences when things are really inefficient.  ITSM (IT Service Management) specialists would know - there must be people, processes and products to implement to make it operational.  It's like the 3-legged stool, all must be present to be functional.

I have been on both sides of Basis and Operations, here are 7 telltale signs that may indicate an organization's IT Operations may not be Operational, or at least not optimally, why we think it's not, and what typical fixes are.
